Argh! I'm sorry to hear about your ride! I swear I didn't know it was contagious!!!
If it's any help, we were looking at used cars with between 30,000-40,000 miles on them, and the best price & values seemed to be Hyundai Sonatas, Elantras, Toyota Corollas, and the Yaris. (There were some nice Impalas around the same price too, if you're looking for something roomier.)
We looked at cars.com and autotrader.com first, then went to a few dealerships that had a car, or cars, that we liked. The research helped a lot to cut down on haggling and time looking at cars we either couldn't afford or that wouldn't suit our needs. In West Texas, I'm not sure the best dealerships to look at, though!! I can tell you that we spent some pretty tough times talking price with the salesmen at a couple dealerships - I think that's the hardest part!!! (Huffines Hyundai was the nicest, but they had limited stock for what we wanted.)
I hope you can find a new car soon! I know just how stressful it can be not to have transportation!
Is there any chance of the Lumina being repaired? I think I remember you having problems with it before so I'm not sure if that's a viable option for y'all. Let me know how it goes.

Nicky: The automobile destruction fairy has attacked our Lumina today. Will crank but makes an awful noise and won't start. It is sitting at school tonight. David had to go to Clovis to have a GPS unit installed on his company car, which means no unauthorized trips anywhere in it. Would like to find a genie who could get us a new ride. Any ideas?

Looks like a real sw-e-e-e-e-e-t ride! Of course you know I am sorry to hear of the demise of the "noble steed". I have survived the first week of school. I have only 13 students (probably will increase after Labor Day). I have 1 student who will challenge me, and another sweet but inwardly mean child who thinks it's OK to spit in someone's hair plus use foul language. Her mother is one of those who thinks her child is "stressed" because I "do not allow her to express herself like her previous teachers did". (Like I believe they let her use profane language in Kinder and 1st grade!). Robert is not sure if he likes the new band directors or not; they are VERY DIFFERENT from the couple we had last year. He is DYING to get to play the drums; last night at the football game we sat near the band and he did all the drum rhythms perfectly. He then wanted to talk to the band director after the game (which the director was chewing the band out for bad behavior in the stands!). We finally convinced him that he should wait until a better time.

I think the first day of school is the hardest on everyone! I was thinking of you when I saw everyone out hurrying to buy school supplies and stuff this past week. It sounds like every year you're in a better position to do more good for the school, though people gum up the works for you! I know you'll get through to your trouble student one way or the other, and hopefully things will keep settling into place.

Poor Nicky! Sounds like you've had a rough couple of weeks. I will pray for your "trusty steed" that the repairs will not be too steep. School has started here. I have a fairly good class; just one young man who rudely refuses to do his work, makes fun of my special needs child (GRRRRRRR!) etc. He will soon meet the wrath of Queen Liz. Yesterday was madness...parents thinking their child would be riding the bus (even though they hadn't made the effort to SIGN THEIR CHILD UP!), parents not picking their child up until 4:30 (forgot school ended at 3) etc. Today went much smoother. I am on a "Professional Learning Committee" which means I will be working on a campus improvement plan/training schedule for our campus. Plus the department is looking to overthrow last year's department head (she was totally incompetent!) and she does not want to leave the post voluntarily. WIll be interesting to see what happens, because the department wants ME to replace her. I asked if I could take over for her, and she BLASTED me in the hall in front of students. "Of course you know, this means war......". Anyhoo....hope things turn out good for your poor automobile. Liz and the Boyz

We had been wondering if Lovey got settled in or not, so good to know that she is in her own place and is settling in. It is good (although scary!) to know that she's getting out and about. I know that she will enjoy being with others to visit with; after Granny went to the nursing home and we were remiss in calling her often she kinda withdrew. I would like to say I am relaxing, but I am working on additional CPE hours online and going to workshops (one tomorrow!) and then we will be in Austin for mini-vacation/ATPE convention (I am secretary/treasurer this year of our chapter!). Robert is chillin' and playing "AVATAR" (video game based on the movie--pretty cool!). David's working today (had Monday off so we worked in my classroom Monday afternoon). Otherwise we are all good. Tell Lovey "hi" for us. Liz and the Kirk Krewe

Update! I am away from my computer (and the place where I wrote down and stashed my passwords) so here's the update - if anyone can find it:
My grandmother/adopted mother/parental unit (aka Lovey!!!) moved in with me on a temporary basis this week. She left Odessa Sunday and I'm sure the facts of the move won't really hit us until she's established in her own place here. She got one night in a hotel room while we waited for my dad to arrive with the moving truck that held, among other things, her medical bed. That situation was, to put it mildly, a debacle. I'll get into details later when I'm less upset about it all.
She moved into my place yesterday, and we've got her settled in for the next two weeks (maybe less) while we wait for paperwork to go through on the new apartments. We went today for her to view the apartment and she was very pleased with what we found there (minus the fact that the toilets weren't ADA, but that can be worked around easily).
I'm staying at my fiance's place at the moment just so I can unwind and she can have some privacy - I think she needs a little solitude at the moment to adjust to the massive change in her life.
Anyway...complete updates will come later when I've gotten back to my own computer and my secret paper stash of passwords. ;)
